Bicentennial Memories

Throughout 2007, the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s bicentennial activities were announced and chronicled on its Web site. With the completion of the celebrations, this site serves as an archive and opportunity to review the year in pictures and stories. It also preserves the historical references to the school’s 200 years of growth. The Bicentennial Boutique also remains open as a virtual shopping center. For more information, contact the school at 2007@som.umaryland.edu or by calling 410-706-8518.

The University of Maryland School of Medicine has endured despite two wars at its doorstep, epidemics, mobs rioting because they didn't believe in the founders' teaching principles, too little money and too much need. And that was just the first century.

As the school's second century ends, the school is a top-tier research institution with a strong academic mandate influenced by renowned scholars. The globe has shrunk to the point that our researchers are called on to alleviate human suffering half a world away while continuing to educate the majority of Maryland's physicians. Our predecessors faced Yellow Fever; we have bioterrorism.

Events throughout 2007 marked the 200th anniversary of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, America's oldest public medical school. Only Penn, Harvard, Columbia and Dartmouth are older. Many events, like the lecture series at the historic Hippodrome Theatre, were open to the public at no charge in appreciation for the enduring support of the people of Maryland and their leaders. The celebration included a formal gala for 1,800 guests and the live broadcast of the public radio show "A Prairie Home Companion".

The school's bicentennial year officially began on November 29, 2006 when Dean E. Albert Reece announced the scope of celebration at a news conference and campus-wide birthday party.
